Recreational Fishing Information
Recreational fishing is important to many Victorians. Fishing has health and well-being benefits and encourages people to get outdoors, appreciate nature, assists with general fitness.
The strongest drivers of angling participation are healthy fisheries. Healthy fisheries provide the basis of good angling.
Victoria's inland waters support populations of a range of native species and include highly valued sportfish such as Golden perch, Murray cod and Australian bass, as well as threatened and endangered species. Ensuring the on-going sustainability of these and other species requires monitoring to follow key aspects of the populations.
